Burst pipe repair
What the job involves, what it costs to put right, and how quickly it needs doing.
Almost everything about the final cost of a burst pipe is determined before a plumber arrives. Not by what broke, by how long it ran.

Do not go looking for the break. Go to the main shutoff and close it. Every second spent identifying which pipe failed is a second of water still entering the house.
In most Norwalk houses the main shutoff is one of three places: on an exterior wall near the front hose bib, in a box at the property line near the sidewalk, or in the garage where the supply enters. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
Find your shutoff now, while nothing is wrong, and turn it fully off and on once. Valves that have not moved in fifteen years seize. Discovering that during an emergency is how a manageable leak becomes a flooded house.
If water is anywhere near outlets, an electrical panel, or a ceiling light below the leak, switch off the relevant breakers before you walk through it. If reaching the panel means crossing standing water, do not, call the utility.
With the main closed, open the lowest faucets in the house and flush a toilet. This drains the pressurised water still sitting in the pipes downward and out, instead of leaving it to keep pushing through the break.
Take more photos than feel necessary, and take them before you move anything. Wide shots of each affected room, close shots of the break itself and of standing water depth against a skirting board or door frame. Insurance adjusters work from evidence, and the evidence disappears the moment you start mopping.
Once the water is off and documented, get standing water out and airflow in. Fans, open windows, a dehumidifier if you own one. Mould gets established in wet drywall in roughly 24 to 48 hours, and a fast dry-out is what keeps a plumbing repair from becoming a remediation project.
Southern California homeowners are often surprised, because the usual culprit elsewhere is freezing. Here the causes are different and slower:
The last two are worth knowing because they are cheap to address. A pressure regulator that is doing its job protects every fitting in the house for a fraction of the cost of a single burst.
